"You own it" — spelled out, so there's nothing to interpret.
Most of the software industry uses the word "yours" loosely. Licensed to you. Hosted for you. Exportable on request. This page is the opposite of loose: six commitments, each one checkable, that apply to every build.
The code lives in your account
The repository is created in your GitHub account, in your name, from the first commit. I work in it because you've granted access. You can revoke that access at any time and lose nothing.
It runs on hosting you pay for directly
Your hosting account, your domain, your database, your API keys. There is no platform of mine underneath any of it, and no bill from me for keeping it online.
Standard, boring technology
Built on widely used, well-documented tools that a very large pool of developers already know. No proprietary framework. No component that only one person on earth understands.
Documentation and a runbook at launch
Written documentation of how the system is put together, and a deployment runbook that explains how to update it, back it up, and move it. Delivered as part of the build, not as an extra.
A recorded walkthrough
A recorded tour of the codebase and the admin tools so any competent developer can pick it up cold — and so you can, if you choose to run it yourself.
Your data, in open formats, forever
Your data is yours from day one and is never held as leverage. Export it in standard formats whenever you like. The care plan is cancellable any month, and cancelling changes nothing about what you own.
If I got hit by a bus tomorrow.
Your business keeps running. Someone else takes over on Monday. Every commitment above exists so that this sentence is true — and you can verify it yourself at handover by opening your repository, reading the runbook and watching the walkthrough.
Ask any SaaS company to make the same promise.
What this guarantee doesn't cover, in the interest of honesty: the commodity services you keep renting — Stripe, Zoom, your accountant's software. Those have their own terms. The rule is own what makes you different, rent what doesn't, and the guarantee covers everything on the "own" side of that line.
Own the part of your business that makes it yours.
A Stack Audit documents every subscription, workflow and limitation in your business and gives you a real break-even number. $500, credited in full if you build with us.
