Cost calculator

Find out what you're really paying.

Put in what you pay each month. The calculator shows the five-year rental total, what owning the same capability costs instead, and the month the two lines cross. Starting values are a real stack replaced last year — overwrite them with yours.

How to read it

What the calculator does and doesn't tell you.

It does show the shape of the decision: rented software is a cost that never ends and usually grows, while a built system is a cost that mostly happens once. For most established businesses the lines cross somewhere between month 12 and month 18.

It doesn't know which of your subscriptions are worth keeping. Payments, video calls and accounting software are cheap commodities and usually stay — own what makes you different, rent what doesn't. It also can't see the cost of the workarounds, the second logins and the features you've stopped asking for. That's what the Stack Audit is for.
